What is a Horizontal CNC Machine?
Our Horizontal CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting equipment allows us to create uniformed 3D models out of foam blocks. Our CNC router, only allows for foam to be cut on a flat bed. Predominantly we use CNC Routers for creating things like custom made foam case inserts. This is great, but isn’t always fit for purpose when a larger, more bulkier design is passed to us. The primary use of horizontal CNC machines is to create specific designs from large blocks of foam, as opposed to cutting from thinner foam sheet materials.
How Does a Horizontal CNC Machine Work?
Horizontal CNC machines work similarly to our CNC Routers, in the sense that they are both controlled using computer software. This is the same for any computer guided cutting equipment. We use CNC machines for more complex designs, which require the utmost level of accuracy. When a client approaches us in need of a specific foam product in varying quantities, CNC cutting is sometimes an option. This really depends on how intrinsic the foam design may be. As the cutting process is carried out through a series of commands given to a computer, there is generally little chance of error.
How Is a Foam Product Designed and Manufactured With A CNC Machine?
When a client approaches us, they will generally have an idea in mind of what they want from us. Sometimes we are verbally told, sometimes we are passed paper drafted schematics and sometimes we are sent CAD (Computer-Aided Design) designs. In all cases, a unique design will always be converted into a CAD file. This allows us to fully lay out specifics for a foam design.
Once we are certain that our client is happy with their design, we can move on to the foam production process. Before we can do this however, the CAD design must be converted into a CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) file. This conversion process, turns our design files into specific commands which our Horizontal CNC cutting machines can read. Once we input our CAM file and have a specific foam type ready, the cutting process can begin.
