What is a Horizontal CNC Machine?
While CNC routers cut foam from above, a Horizontal CNC Machine is capable of making incisions into the side of a piece foam. Our Horizontal CNC machine allows us to cut complex patterns into large foam blocks. As the machine is operated by a computer, this same pattern can be perfectly replicated as many times as required. For example, if we wanted to create a sheet of foam with wave profiling, this machine would allow us to do so. The machine would cut the necessary pattern along the foam block and then replicate it as specified.
How Does a Horizontal CNC Machine Work?
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. The Horizontal CNC Machine is guided by a computer system in order to cut the foam.
The design for a particular foam product will initially be drawn up in CAD (Computer Aided Design) Software. Once the design is completed, the file needs to be converted into a format that the Horizontal CNC Machine can read. This process converts the initial CAD file into what is called a CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) file.
The CAM file specifies the path for processing via sets of coordinates. The material, required thickness and quantity are also specified in the CAM file.
Some foam products can be cut to size using manually controlled machinery. However, when a foam product is particularly intrinsic, CNC machinery is required to achieve the correct level of precision.
Designing Foam Products for CNC Machine Cutting
When a foam product is particularly complex to cut and replicate, we will use a CNC machine to manufacture it. If you require a unique foam product, our in-house design team can work closely with you to draw up the necessary design files. Once you are happy with the design, we will proceed to manufacture as many as you require.
