What is Splitting and Skiving?
Splitting and skiving involves taking an entire block of foam, placing it on a horizontal flatbed and then cutting it to create foam sheets of a desired thickness.
As a professional foam converter, it’s our job to take full-size blocks of foam and cut them into useable products. Many of our customers (such as upholsterers) require foam sheets to carry out their work. By using a splitting and skiving machine, we can quickly and easily produce the sheets our customers need.
We stock a wide range of foam sheets suitable for many different applications. Some types we stock include memory foam, recon foam and reticulated foam.
How a Foam Splitter Works
Our factory contains a digitally controlled flatbed foam splitter. This is the machine we use to quickly and accurately create our foam sheets. The entire process is very fast and is conducted automiatically under the supervision of a trained foam cutting technician. The technician is required to remove the foam sheets as they are cut in order to make way for the next one.
Splitting and skiving works by placing a large block of polyurethane foam onto the machine’s flatbed. The required thickness is then established. Once this has been completed, the machine begins the cutting process.
The foam block is forced lengthways through the splitter. The sharp blade of the machine then splits the foam block from the top, maintaining the required thickness. Once the foam block has passed fully through the blade, the foam technician removes the newly cut sheet. The foam block is then lowered, passes back under the blade and then raises again once it has fully passed through. This process is repeated until the foam block has been fully converted into foam sheets.
