About High Density Foam

It’s common to believe that high density foam is automatically firmer foam. These two factors often get confused. Whilst it is true that high density foam generally exhibits a firmer feel, low density foam also can. In fact, when we measure the density of foam, we’re looking for a better indication of the foams overall weight.

Being heavier, high density foam tends to be more hard wearing and long lasting than foam with a lower density. This is because high density foam consists of more compressed material.

Calculating Density

To determine whether a foam is high density foam or not, we can use a simple calculation. By dividing the weight of the foam by its width x height x length we can determine how dense a certain grade of foam is. We express the density of foam by the weight per cubic foot.

What is ILD?

How firm a certain grade of foam is doesn’t directly correlate between whether you’re working with high density foam or low. When it comes to comfort, some people prefer different levels of firmness.

In order to gauge how firm a certain type of foam is, we can conduct an ILD test. ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. By applying certain levels of pressure to a piece of foam, we can gauge how firm it is depending on the way it compresses. A less firm foam will compress with lesser amounts of pressure applied whereas a firmer foam will respond in the opposite manner.

What Is High Density Foam Used For?

High density foam has a wide array of uses. It provides exceptional levels of support and is also noted to last longer than foams with a lower density. The foam is often used in seating for this very purpose. However, it’s not just seating that high density foam is suitable for. In fact, a large majority of the foam we work with has a high density.

What is High Density Foam? A Guide to Foam Density

High density foam is used for a variety of different applications. It helps to provide support in seating and is often found used as a base layer in memory foam mattresses. Compared to foam types with a lower density, high density foam is known for its sturdiness and longevity.

It is common to believe that high density foam is inherently firm. This, however, is not the case. High density foam can range from a firm feel to a soft feel. In fact, the density of foam is determined through its weight per cubic foot. The more compact the cell structure of a foam grade, the higher the density of it.

High Density Foam – Determining Foam Density

To calculate the density of a piece of foam you must divide the weight of a piece by what the length, width, and height multiplies to. The calculation would look like this – Weight ÷ Width x Height x Length = Density.

The density is determined by weighing one cubic foot (12” x 12” x 12”) of the foam grade and performing the previously mentioned calculation.

To be considered high density foam, the foam must weigh more than 6 pounds per cubic foot. High density foam is generally considered to last longer than foam with a low density. That is why it is often used within good quality pieces of furniture. The higher the density, the heavier the foam will be. Foam with a high density will be more difficult to move around than low density foam but should prove to last longer because of the greater amount of compressed material.
